Preemies may have greater risk of premature death as adults, study suggests

Preemies may have greater risk of premature death as adults, study suggests One in 10 babies around the world is born prematurely, and the vastly improved survival rates of preemies is one of the most striking advances of modern health care with the overwhelming majority of those born preterm reaching adulthood. But what are the long-term health risks of being born too early as these infants approach middle and old age? It’s a question that has been difficult to answer with many individuals in follow-up studies still too young to draw meaningful conclusions. However, new research that looked at more than 6 million people born in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland mainly in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s has found that individuals born preterm are at a

This snake robot will fix pipelines on the ocean floor

This snake robot will fix pipelines on the ocean floor CNN 3/4/2021 By Adrian Lydon, CNN Business © Eelume Subsea Intervention The snake-like Eelume robot can be docked underwater for months at a time. The deep-sea oil and gas industry has a vast and costly infrastructure to maintain. Wells, other equipment, and thousands of kilometers of pipeline must be installed, inspected and repaired. Now, cutting-edge underwater drones and robots are being developed that could make the work safer, cheaper and less polluting. Among them is Eelume, a six-meter-long, snake-like robot kitted out with sensors and a camera at each end. It can be kept at a docking station at depths up to 500 meters (547 yards) for six months, without being brought back to the surface.

TGen-NAU study: COVID-19 virus triggers antibodies from previous coronavirus infections

This knowledge could help researchers design new diagnostics, evaluate the healing powers of convalescent plasma, develop new therapeutic treatments, and importantly help design future vaccines or monoclonal antibody therapies capable of protecting against mutations that may occur in the COVID-19 virus. The findings could help explain the widely varying reactions COVID-19 patients have to the disease.
