Vance County begins preparing for property re-appraisal

HENDERSON — Vance County officials are beginning to get ready for a re-appraisal of local property values that by the middle of the decade likely will end up influencing the property taxes residents pay. The county government intends at the end of August to ask contractors to bid for the right to conduct the assessments, a job County Manager Jordan McMillen and his staff believe will take nearly 16 months of labor. Their goal is to have the new assessments in place by 2024, in time for County Commissioners to take them into account when they’re deciding on the fiscal 2024-25 budget and its associated tax rate, officials said.

Ask SAM: When will my state tax refund be issued?

Millions of Americans are expecting a tax refund. Many will use it on things like bills, debt and other essentials. If you don’t have any pressing financial matters to pay for at the moment, you may look at investing it in your future. PennyGem’s Johana Restrepo has more. Q: Can you get us an update on when we might expect our NC State tax refund? We submitted our tax digitally March 5 and have checked the NCDOR web site with no adequate explanation. This is unacceptable and irresponsible for us to not have our refund yet. — C.W. Answer: Schorr Johnson, the director of public affairs for the N.C. Department of Revenue, said that

Automatic payments ensure cash assistance reaches families most in need of support

A special data request from the NC Department of Revenue showed that 157,000 families who received Extra Credit Payments in the last round had incomes so low that they were not required to file income taxes. Since the Extra Credit Grant Program has been extended through May 31 and a proposal is on the table to further extend the deadline in the Senate, the Department of Revenue is working with United Way’s network of direct service providers on outreach to increase awareness among low income families. But for families with very low incomes, it isn’t just access to the Extra Credit Grant Program and ad hoc partnerships that could ensure their access to federal Economic Impact Payments and expansions of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. A more systemic investment in the infrastructure that can connect people to these programs and a community-driven public awareness effort akin to the efforts around vaccination should be a priority in North Carolina.
