DMV resumes regular license road test program

ROCKY MOUNT — With health-safety conditions improving in North Carolina, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has resumed regular road tests this week. This ends the Contactless Road Test (CRT) program that had been required for 15-17 year-old drivers seeking their Level 3 Full Provisional license and a select group of other drivers who could not qualify for a road test waiver. All drivers who already had been scheduled for a CRT should proceed with that appointment, but be aware they will instead be taking a road test in regular traffic conditions, instead of the parking lots where CRTs were conducted.

DMV suspends plate-replacement program

Aluminum Shortage Impacts License Plate Industry

A world-wide shortage of aluminum is forcing the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles to indefinitely suspend its program to replace license plates that are older than six years. The move is being taken to help ensure there is enough material to produce first-time plates. Normal first-time plate production is 400-500 a day. But the older plate replacement program, passed into law by the General Assembly, meant that figure this year has been about 10 times that number. More than 640,000 replacement plates were produced in the first four months of this year, with about another 1.4 million projected to be needed for the rest of the 2021.

Sheriff: Deputies charged in forfeiture case suspended

HENDERSON — Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame says the three deputies facing criminal charges that accuse them of conspiring to mount an end run around North Carolina’s asset-forfeiture laws are suspended pending the resolution of their charges. But the sheriff also said that while an internal investigation found “violation of office policy and [a] lack of training,” he also believes that “protocol was followed” and “at this time, I do not have any evidence that would warrant the charges brought against them.” Brame’s comments, issued via an emailed written statement, responded to the booking the day before of his second-in-command, Maj. Steve Staton, and narcotics deputies Mitch Pittman and Purav Patel.
