Pakistani police have arrested over 30 people, most of them belonging to a radical Islamist party, after a Hindu temple was vandalised and set on fire by a mob protesting its renovation in northwest Pakistan.
A central leader of radical Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, Rehmat Salam Khattak, is among those arrested in police raids following the attack on Terri temple and Samadhi of Shri Paramhans Ji Maharaj in Karak area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Wednesday, police said.
The mob, led by some local clerics and the supporters of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party (Fazal ur Rehman group), protesting the expansion work of the shrine, demolished the newly constructed work alongside the old structure.

A mob of dozens on Wednesday set fire to, and demolished, several parts of a shrine dedicated to a Hindu saint in the Karak area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, prompting outrage and promises from the government to ensure the rights of minorities in Pakistan were protected.
Videos of the mob desecrating the shrine and chanting pro-Islam slogans went viral on social media. In the videos, smoke can be seen emitting from various parts of the shrine, as the crowds destroy the building using pickaxes and shovels.

A Hindu temple was vandalised by an angry mob in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place in Terri village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa s Karak district, District Police Officer Irfan Marwat told reporters.
According to Marwat, protesting the expansion work of the temple, the mob demolished the newly constructed work alongside the old structure.
Neither any case has been registered and nor any arrest made so far in the incident.
Pakistan s federal Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights Lal Chand Malhi strongly condemned the vandalisation of the temple by some anti-social elements .
Noting that some groups are active in carrying out such anti-social activities to defame Pakistan, Malhi said the government will not tolerate such incidents.
