Ferry services between Shimulia and Banglabazar were suspended for over two hours yesterday morning when a motorcade of the BNP was supposed to go across the Padma river.
BNP leaders and activists, who were on the way to a rally in Barishal, then left their vehicles and hired boats to go across the river.
The authorities concerned said there was a technical issue, but BNP leaders said the services have been suspended around 8:00am just to prevent them from joining the rally.

MANIKGANJ, Jan 29, 2021 (BSS) – The ferry movement on the Paturia-Daulatdia route in Manikganj resumed this morning after 8.30 hours of suspension to avert any untoward incident due to dense fog.
BIWTC Paturia ghat sources said the ferry service on the route was suspended from 1 am on Thursday midnight due to poor visibility as the dense fog blanketed the river route.
Md. Zillur Rahman, deputy general manager (DGM)of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Paturia Ghat said the ferry movement started at about 9.30 am today when the dense fog started to disappear.
“It was the 12 consecutive days of the disruption of ferry movement due to dense fog,” Paturia ghat sources said, adding that movements of all kinds of engine and country boats including launches were also suspended during the period.

The ongoing cold spell that has paralysed normal life across the country, especially in the northern region, may continue for the next one week. Mild cold wave is sweeping over some regions and it may continue till February 3 to 4, said Ruhul Quddus, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department. However, temperatures may slightly rise tomorrow [Friday]. But it may fall again from the next day, he told The Daily Star last evening.
Meanwhile, a weather bulletin yesterday said, Mild cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur division and the regions of Sitakunda, Sreemangal, Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon and Chuadanga and it may continue.

Reduced visibility caused by a dense fog disrupted ferry services across the Padma, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the river yesterday.
Buses full of people and hundreds of trucks had to wait for up to nine hours to go across the river.
Ferry services from Shimulia-Banglabazar and Paturia-Daulatdia are considered gateways to 21 of the country s southern districts.
Meanwhile, a Met office bulletin yesterday said the temperature dip may persist for a while. Mild cold wave is sweeping over the regions of Rangamati, Sreemangal, and Panchagarh and it may continue.
