SREENAGAR: Tens of thousands of migrant workers fled Bangladesh’s capital on Sunday on the eve of a tightened lockdown that will curtail most economic activity and confine people to their homes as coronavirus infections soar.
Restrictions on activities and movement have been in place since mid-April as cases and deaths jumped.
Infections declined in May but started to rise again this month, with over 5,000 new cases and a pandemic-high of 119 deaths on Sunday, according to the health ministry.

The government on Sunday again suspended operations of all public transports excepting goods-carrying vehicles and rickshaws from 6:00am on June 28 to 6:00am on July 1 to contain the Covid outbreak amid the mad rush of people to and from the Dhaka city following the government’s recent announcement of a nationwide ‘stricter lockdown’.

Lockdown: Mad rush of homebound people at Shimulia terminal

Thousands of people overcrowded the Shimulia ferry terminal on Sunday in their frantic efforts to get back their village homes ahead of the hard lockdown.
People were seen flocking the Shimulia-Banglabazar ferry ghat and crossing the river since morning ignoring health safety protocols.
Safayet Ahmed, manager of Shimulia ghat of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation, said that 15 out of the 16 ferries are running on the route since morning. Commuters have been boarding the ferries though they are not allowed.
Around 400 vehicles were waiting at Shimulia ferry ghat to cross the Padma river in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj this morning, he said.
