Health experts repeatedly warned that the ongoing wave of coronavirus might spike further amid the mad rush of home-bound people during the Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Major ferry terminals are witnessing massive crowds as Eid holidaymakers started returning to the capital in great numbers, defying the restrictions against coronavirus. The people from north and eastern regions who went to their village homes to celebrate the Eid also started to come back to the capital by Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Chattogram highways.

Sixteen ferries are plying on the route of Shimulia in Munshiganj and Banglabazar in Madaripur. Over 100 people and 150 vehicles were seen waiting at the ferry terminals around 12:30pm, reports our Munshiganj correspondent from the spot. Profullo Chowhan, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) in Shimulia terminal, told The Daily Star, Even on the second day of Eid, a significant presence of passengers is seen at the ferry ghat. Each ferry crossed the Padma river full of passengers since this morning. Many people are still leaving Dhaka. Besides, those who earlier went to their homes for Eid celebration have started coming back to Dhaka, but their numbers are not very high.

BGB personnel keep watch on Covid safety protocols at Shimulia ferry ghat UNB 13th May, 2021 03:31:59 Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed at Shimulia ferry ghat since Thursday morning to ensure people follow social distancing norms and wear masks. The ferry ghat is witnessing an unprecedented rush as thousands of migrant workers are leaving Dhaka and adjoining areas for their home districts to celebrate Eid with their families. Fourteen of the 16 ferries are currently operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route. Such is the rush that the ferries are carrying mostly home-bound passengers, leaving vehicles behind. Assistant General Secretary of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Md Shafiqur Rahman said, The remaining two ferries are being repaired and it won’t be possible for us to increase the numbers on this route.
