Economy bruised, not broken
The year 2020 could have been a watershed for Bangladesh. Policymakers would have put their heads together and looked at what have been achieved and what went wrong in order to set targets accordingly to become a prosperous and developed nation.
But people had to spend the entire year fighting against the deadly virus to keep their heads above water as the pandemic headwinds have brought the whole world to its knees.
Amid distress and devastation everywhere, businesses were in a testing situation that they had not experienced at least in the last two decades.
It was kind of an endurance test for the economy, and so far, it appeared to be a winner, despite bruises.
Jute ministry forms committee over reopening of BJMC’s closed mills

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute formed a nine-member inter-ministerial working committee to examine and consider the proposal received for re-introducing BJMC s closed mills under private management on lease basis.
The ministry issued an order in this regard yesterday, said a press release.
The additional secretary (administration) of the ministry has been made convener of the committee.
Other members of the committee are representatives of the Prime Minister s Office, additional secretary (Jute) of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, representatives of Finance Department, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Executive Director of Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC).

RAJSHAHI, Dec 22, 2020 (BSS) – Sabina Yeasmin Lipi has explored herself as a potential entrepreneur by dint of her painstaking efforts of boosting level of confidence through income-generating activities.
Yeasmin Lipi, a resident of Terakhadia Uttarpara in Rajshahi city, has been operating her boutique business successfully for the last couple of years. Around 70 women from the less-income and other marginalized families are working in her business establishment.
Recently, she has expanded her business with investment of Taka three lakh afresh after getting a month-long training on entrepreneurship and skill development. She has knowledge of dying printing, block boutique, fashion design and diversified jute goods marketing.

Experts at a webinar on Sunday stressed the need for taking some concerted steps like promoting export competitiveness, reducing dependency on revenue from imports, raising the tax-GDP ratio as well as expanding the tax net, and putting utmost priority to the trade policy options with EU and UK in a bid to ensure smooth LDC graduation of Bangladesh.
They also suggested for prioritizing those FTAs only where export market access is critical, becoming selective about FTAs as mad rush to any FTA will not yield good, and offsetting costs to improve competitiveness for Bangladesh.
