Originally, FIDE wanted to organise the Chess Olympiad 2020 in Moscow, but the Corona pandemic out a stop to these plans. Instead, an Online Olympiad was played and the Chess Olympiad was postponed to 2021.
The Belorussian capital Minsk had applied to host the 2022 Chess Olympiad but as the country has been in a state of emergency since the last – so obviously manipulated – presidential election the organisers withdrew the application. In the short time available, the FIDE did not find a new candidate who was willing to commit to organise the Olympiad 2022. After all, possible candidates would not only have to organise the Chess Olympiad but the World Cup 2022 as well.
