When you ask about Ken Kupchick around Fort Smith, one theme is often repeated gratitude. I was at the sack lunch program, and he came and knocked on the door. He said he could help me, Jean Kollejski, co-director of the Sack Lunch Program, said. I didn t know who he was, but he knew how to get supplies and services to feed people in Fort Smith . and I learned tremendously from him. Ken will be greatly missed in our volunteer community. He has spent so many years dedicating himself to the needs of the lower-income and food-insecure populations in our community, Sharon Chapman, executive director of The Next Step Homeless Services, said.
When Tracy McAnelly s mother died, he thought he had nowhere to go but the streets.
That was until August 2018, when he joined the Buddy Smith Home, 500 North Ninth St., through Next Step Homeless Services. The facility houses up to 15 veterans at a time who are transitioning out of homelessness about one-fourth of the total number of people serviced through the transitional housing program.
Through Buddy Smith Home, McAnelly stayed away from drugs, built up savings and got a job running security at Hope Campus. It was supposed to be a six-month deal, but because I was doing everything I was supposed to, they let me stay an extra six months, McAnelly said.
Fort Smith Times Record
While a study by TOP marketing agency says charitable giving increased 11% in Arkansas from 2019-2020, nonprofits in the Fort Smith area have seen mixed results.
The study states Arkansas residents on average gave $736 to charity in 2020 up from roughly $663 the year prior, putting the state ninth overall for the average amount donated by residents. The study looked at weekly spending data from 900,000 United States residents. This spending was then mapped to more than 150 preselected charities, including the American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, and Goodwill, and then cross-checked with the organizations.
Nationally, residents gave 25% more than the year prior despite widespread financial uncertainty from COVID-19, according to the study.
