Warm weather, longer days and more plentiful food are some of the reasons that wild animals tend to give birth in the spring. Sometimes these baby animals stray from their mothers and wander alone into backyards, onto porches or into more wooded, secluded settings where well-meaning wildlife lovers think they need to be rescued. That is a mistake. When people interfere with wildlife in their natural habitats, they often do more harm than good. They also put themselves at risk of exposure to fatal diseases such as rabies, even from a cute, small animal who appears healthy.

Nurses Lead the Way, Provide Vision for Future
May 12 is International Nurses Day, celebrated annually on the birthday of the legendary Florence Nightingale. Known by many as the “lady with the lamp,” Nightingale is credited with ushering in the age of modern nursing, due to her lasting contributions in public health.
On this occasion, Putnam County Executive, MaryEllen Odell, is praising the nurses and nursing staff at the health department, saying, “Our public health nurses have showed a devotion to our residents and endurance to the task at hand, not witnessed often. Our community and our economy are headed in the right direction, and it is through their hard work, and their leadership and collaboration with other agencies and partners that we have been able to achieve this.”

Putnam County Health Department Seeks Input from Unvaccinated Residents Written by Putnam County Department of Health
The Putnam County Department of Health has launched a COVID-19 vaccine survey to gather feedback from those who remain unvaccinated in the community. Vaccine supplies have increased and now everyone 16 years and older who lives, works, or attends school in New York State is eligible to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine.
“The health department wants to make sure that everyone who is eligible has a chance to get a vaccine,” stated Michael J. Nesheiwat, MD, Commissioner of Health for Putnam County. “People may remain unvaccinated due to individual time constraints, lack of access, a limited understanding of the risks of COVID, or just a more general vaccine hesitancy. Dr. Nesheiwat continued, the results of this survey will be used to guide our department into better focusing on, and addressing, the needs of our unvaccinated citizens. Moreov
