New Program Aims to Help Farmers with Mental, Physical Health

WBGZ Radio 4/2/2021 | By Kevin Bessler - Illinois Radio Network Nearly every industry has felt the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and the farming and agriculture industry in Illinois is no exception. In light of the challenges faces by farmers this year, SIU Medicine in Carbondale along with the Illinois Department of Agriculture has launched a new program called the Farm Family Resource Initiative. The goal of the pilot program is to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of Illinois farm owners and their families. Karen Stallmann, an Agriculture Resource Specialist at SIU, said someone should be there if an Illinois farmer needs a helping hand.

Farm Family Resource Initiative | Rural Partners Webinar Series

  A new network provides farm families in Christian, Logan, Macon, Macoupin, Morgan and Sangamon counties with support. The Farm Family Resource Initiative is supported by the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development. University of Illinois Extension is hosting a free online webinar at noon March 30 to discuss the program. The initiative provides a helpline for farmers and provides outreach, education, and training. Registration is required.. Karen Stallman, agriculture resource specialist at SIU School of Medicine Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development will discuss the new program. Stallman is the coordinator of the Farm Family Resource Initiative.
