BISMARCK – Billy Ogdahl of Milnor won the North Dakota Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet at the Farm and Ranch Conference held Feb.5-7, at the Ramada Hotel in Bismarck.
Other finalists for the award were Aspen Lenning, Plaza, Aaron Subart, Robinson, and Anna Lemm, Hillsboro, according to information provided by the North Dakota Farm Bureau. The Discussion Meet is an exchange of ideas and information from participants on a predetermined topic.
“Participating in the NDFB Discussion Meet is much more than a competition,” said Ogdahl. “Each year we walk away with new perspectives and solutions to take home to our communities.”

(SPRINGFIELD) Congratulations to two regional Farm Bureau members who represented our downstate area very well in recent competition during this past week’s 2021 American Farm Bureau Federation Convention. Lawrence County native Alex Mahrenholz finished among the top in the Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet, making it to the Sweet 16 Round. The nationwide competitors discussed topics including data sharing, climate change, and international trade. Mahrenholz recently started a new job as a Purdue University extension educator in Pike County, Indiana. Meanwhile, Clay County native Joe Goodman was a part of the Young Farmers and Ranchers Excellence in Ag Competition with a virtual presentation about his personal and professional background on agriculture, leadership ability, and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations. Madeline Meyer grew up on a dairy farm in Michigan and through connections with her college professors now works at Tollcrest Dairy in Wheatland.
On Dec. 8, Meyer, 22, won the Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet during the California Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in Sacramento. Meyer represented Yuba County in the final four that took place on day three of a four-day meeting.
To get to the final four, Meyer had to submit an entry on YouTube and then participate in a discussion via video conference. At each stage, contestants were given a different topic to discuss within the agriculture industry. Meyer said the idea is for the discussion to mirror a committee meeting instead of a debate. Topics included international trade, sustainability, rural economies, rural connectivity and natural disasters.

INDIANAPOLIS â Nathan Bush, Johnson County, is the winner of the 2020 Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ag Professionals Discussion Meet.
The competition, which was held Dec. 11 as part of the INFB Virtual State Convention, is one of the three major awards presented to Farm Bureau members age 35 and younger.
During the competition, contestants participated in a virtual group discussion that simulates a committee meeting. Bush and the other finalists discussed common dilemmas and potential problems facing farmers in America, such as:
