The 26-foot-tall, stainless steel and aluminum statue portray the movie star in her famous scene from The Seven Year Itch, wearing a white dress while standing over a subway grate. NPR reported that while the sculpture, named Forever Marilyn was previously installed in the city from 2012 to 2014 and now will be fitted permanently at Coachella Valley. While hospitality leaders say that the attraction will benefit the city and bring in tourists, others have said the new placement of the piece is problematic.

But NPR reports that some locals are petitioning against the return of the statue they’re calling “misogynistic” due to its prominent exposure of Monroe’s underwear. Advertisement The statue, “Forever Marilyn,” sculpted by Seward Johnson, is inspired by photos of Monroe on the set of 1955 s The Seven Year Itch in which Monroe stands over a subway grate, enjoying the breeze as the subway passes by, blowing up the skirt of her dress in the process. The scene is not only the most celebrated photo of Monroe, it’s also arguably one of the most recognizable photos of the 20th century.
