Itâs no surprise that just about everything that will happen during the 60-day Session will be directly or indirectly related to the pandemic or influenced by the countless ways it has changed life in our state.
From health care policy to the budget, from education policy to the environment, the Session will seem like all COVID-19, all the time. Even where legislation doesnât directly link to COVID-19 â say, school choice â lawmakers will be factoring in what it will cost in a pandemic-battered economy or how it will help kids whose schooling was turned upside down.

For the last six years, he and his sister have been fighting for their parents to secure green cards the final step before the elderly couple could leave Iran and move to California to be with their children. Their mother, Mina, received her immigrant visa in 2016.
But their father, Ebrahim, was waiting on the results of a background check by U.S. officials when in 2017 the Trump administration passed its first version of a travel ban on Muslim-majority nations that included Iran. Like thousands of others, the 82-year-old physician was barred from entering the United States.

US president Joe Biden’s quest for a de-Trumpification of US policies started at a fast pace, with the new president signing 25 executive orders a few hours after his inauguration. One of them was to reverse the “Muslim ban“, which served as great news for Nigerians.
Last February, then president Trump added Nigeria to an expanded list of visa bans which was initially just Muslim-majority countries. Nigerians were prevented from being able to apply for permanent immigrant visas to the US. This stopped family and spousal reunion, and skill-based immigrants and the firms that needed them were also dealt a blow.

The Department of State announced at the beginning of October the Diversity Visa 2022 Program (DV-2022). The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program makes available up to 55,000 diversity visas (DVs) each year, drawn from random selection among all entries, to persons who meet strict eligibility requirements from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Applicants may submit entries for the DV-2022 program electronically at dvprogram.state.gov, between Wednesday, October 7, 2020, and Tuesday, November 10, 2020. No late entries or paper entries will be accepted. There is no fee to enter. The law allows only one entry for each person during each registration period. Entrants who submit more than one entry will be ineligible to receive a DV. However, a husband and a wife may each submit a separate entry, listing the other as a derivative dependent, if each meets the eligibility requirements.
