American medical schools see increase in applications amid pandemic
FORT MYERS, Fla. Medical schools across the country are calling it the Fauci Effect.
Some are attributing the increase in medical school applications, up 18 percent in 2020, to students that are inspired by medical workers and public health figures Like Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Applications to Florida Gulf Coast University’s medical programs are up more than 50 percent compared to last year.
Jacqueline Cortes, a FGCU PA School student, said she has been interested in the medical field for years.
“I worked as a medical scribe, from there i worked as an EMT, then from there i worked for neurosurgeons,” Cortes said.
