(VictimVoicesYXE/Instagram) Ehjae Chan wants to create a community to help survivors of sexual violence in Saskatoon.  Chan knows first-hand how hard it can be to talk about experiencing violence, but also how healing that talk can be.  There s something very powerful that happens when you share a story of oppression and violence, said Chan, who lives in Alberta now but used to live in Saskatoon. When you bring it out into the light, I think that it loses a little bit of power… whether it s an actual person or the public space of the Internet.

“Not every abuser is caught, like what if the partner doesn’t have a documented history of violence?” she said. “So there are holes in it.” Amber Stewart, Executive Director of the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC), agreed the legislation was very good news for families and victims of domestic abuse in the province, noting Saskatchewan has led the country in rates of domestic violence. “Any time we can make a change to support women in leaving and [have them] feeling supported in leaving, that’s a huge step forward,” she said. In the past months, the Battlefords Sexual Assault Centre has already worked with the local RCMP detachment with presentation on the services and assistance the shelter provides, as well as several forms of training. However, moving forward, Stewart acknowledged she does have questions.

Battlefords & Area Sexual Assault Centre, Battlefords RCMP develop new safe interview space SHARE ON: The Battlefords Sexual Assault Centre logo. (Battlefords & Area Sexual Assault Centre, Facebook) The Battlefords & Area Sexual Assault Centre is providing a new safe space for victims to come forward and share their story. The centre and Battlefords RCMP worked in partnership to build a more welcoming interview room inside of the centre for victims of sexual assault or abuse. The idea first came to Executive Director Amber Stewart after seeing the interview room inside the RCMP building. She says the room wasn’t too inviting and started making plans for the renovations in August.
