Alberta is moving K-12 students to at-home learning, closing patios and salons, and increasing fines for rulebreakers in an effort to stem a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
The measures, announced by Premier Jason Kenney Tuesday night, are the strongest put in place since last spring and apply to any region or community except for those with fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 people and fewer than 30 active cases.

The latest COVID-19 update from the province brought new restrictions.
As of Tuesday, May 4, Fort Saskatchewan reported 148 active cases of the coronavirus. Sherwood Park reported 316 cases, Strathcona County counted 77 cases, and Sturgeon County reported 97 cases.

The City’s rate of infection has spiked, with a 524.9 active case rate per 100,000 residents reported on Sunday. The Wednesday prior the rate of infection was just 432.5, in comparison.
The new restrictions come as Alberta has the highest number of new COVID-19 cases per week of any province or state in North America and the highest number of active cases by population of any province in Canada. On Tuesday, Alberta reported 1,743 new infections, bringing the total number of active cases to a new record of 23,623, and nine additional deaths.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney will make a live speech Tuesday at 6:02 p.m. to announce new public health measures to limit the spread the COVID-19.
A press conference won’t be held until Wednesday at 10 a.m. when Kenney, Health Minister Tyler Shandro, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange and Justice Minister Kaycee Madu will answer questions, the premier’s executive director of communications Brock Harrison confirmed on Twitter Tuesday.
