Home/Florida Good/Alachua County Conducts 2021 Point-in-Time Count Amid Pandemic Alachua County Conducts 2021 Point-in-Time Count Amid Pandemic By Lillian Lawson January 27, 2021 Dozens of volunteers met at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church early Tuesday with coffee and donuts in hand, ready for the annual point-in-time count of homeless people in Alachua County. The volunteers found their team and zone assignments on a whiteboard. Each team gathered plenty of red care bags with toiletries, socks, ponchos and snacks to give to those without shelter. Their goal: Spending the day finding and counting as many of the homeless population within the county as possible.

In fact, some groups have massaged their missions in order to help those who have felt the economic impact of the coronavirus. One such organization is Grow It Green Morristown, which works to create sustainable farms and gardens, and educate communities on healthy eating and environmental stewardship. Lisa Alexander, executive director of the nonprofit said, “In 2020, determined to serve, Grow It Green modified programs and focused resources to meet the needs of our community in crisis. We provided equitable and sustained access to fresh, local food, outdoor spaces and activities, and education about the environment and health in a year when food insecurity, racial equity and climate change issues were brought to the forefront.”

It is with much love and sadness we mourn the passing of Barbara A. Beals, age 79. She left us while peacefully sleeping, due to complications of COVID on January 8, 2021, at the Annandale Care Center, knowing she was deeply loved. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date at Bethany Lutheran Church in Loman, Minnesota. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Barb was born February 12, 1941, in International Falls, Minnesota to Rudy and Bess Lemke. Barb grew up in International Falls where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1959. She furthered her education at St. Cloud State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Barb began her teaching career at Annandale Elementary, where she taught 3rd grade. It was during this time, she met her future husband, Wilmar “Bill” Beals. They were united in marriage in 1967, made their home in Annandale and began their family with their daughter Cindy.
