Provincial award recognizes Zanatta

HSCDSB praises vice-principals accomplishments

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board says one of its vice-principals has been honoured by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association. Nadia Zanatta, the Vice-Principal at Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion Catholic School in Elliot Lake has received the association’s Student Trustee Alumni Award. The award is given annually to a former Catholic student trustee who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in any field and positive Catholic values. Zanatta thanks her family and colleagues for the recognition recalling her experience as a trustee back in 2005 at St. Mary’s College, which set in motion her career choice in educational administration.

Online schooling pushes board into red

Article content Costs tied to running a virtual school during the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board into the red for 2020-2021. The English Catholic board passed a balanced budget of $79.9 million last August. But additional staff needed for Our Lady of Lourdes Virtual Academy, now known as Holy Trinity Catholic Virtual Academy, and Holy Angels Virtual Academy for secondary students, resulted in a deficit of $291,384, said superintendent of business Justin Pino in a report to trustees. Expected cost of the virtual school for 2020-2021 is $2.7 million. HSCDSB is receiving funding – $1.4 million from the provincial government, $900,000 from the federal government – to help with online education costs.
