Fraternal Order of Police issues no-confidence vote against BPD Chief

BIRMINGHAM – The Fraternal Order of Police has issued a no-confidence vote against Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith. Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith The votes were taken on Wednesday night at a special called board meeting. According to the group’s website, the Alabama State FOP consists of 62 subordinate lodges with approximately 8,000 members. Following the vote, FOP Lodge No. 1 attorney Liz Young cited a spike in violence throughout Birmingham since Smith’s three-year tenure began. See Young’s full statement below. “The FOP Executive Board and the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in favor of a vote of no confidence for Chief Smith and Assistant Chief Davenport. Board members and I have attempted to resolve these issues with both the Chief and the Mayor for many months; however, no efforts have been made by either party to address our concerns.

(WBRC) - Jefferson County deputies said a man was shot and killed Tuesday in the Center Point area about an hour after a woman was assaulted at the same location. Deputies said they got a call around 1:30 p.m. from a home on Haversham Circle in regards to a man threatening and assaulting a woman. While deputies were searching for the man they said they got a call back at the location at 3:00 p.m. that the same man had been shot by another man. Investigators say the suspected shooter took off.

(WBRC) - The Jefferson County Coroner said a 24-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident early Monday morning. The coroner said Patrick Branden Higgins, of Vestavia Hills, died after midnight when he was riding a motorcycle and struck a vehicle at 2nd Avenue North at 24th Street North in Birmingham.
