Deadly shooting in parking lot of east Birmingham car wash ruled justifiable

No charges will be filed in the shooting death of a 27-year-old man shot to death in the parking lot of an east Birmingham car wash.
Detraio Deshawn Whorton was killed Feb. 25 in the 8600 block of First Avenue North. The Birmingham Police Department on Thursday – two weeks to the day that Whorton died – announced investigators had presented their evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office which deemed the deadly shooting justifiable.
Birmingham police received a 911 call at 5:11 p.m. that Thursday reporting a man had been shot in his vehicle. When they arrived at the location - a parking lot in the 8600 block of First Avenue North - they found Whorton suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the neck.

Retired Birmingham police officer Randall Versie Smith died Dec. 29. (Birmingham PD)
BIRMINGHAM, AL The Birmingham Police Department announced this week that retired police officer Randall Versie Smith has died. Smith recently suffered a fall at his home resulting in his hospitalization, and ultimately succumbed to those injuries Monday.
Smith began his career with the Birmingham Police Department on January 4, 1988. On March 22, 1995, Smith along with other officers responded to a domestic dispute in Ensley. While responding to the call, Smith rescued a toddler during a domestic incident involving a person with a gun.On this call Smith was accidently wounded by the gunfire of a fellow officer.
Birmingham Police Department launches smartphone app

The Birmingham Police Department on Monday announced the release of its smartphone app.
The app will serve as the newest way for police to connect with Birmingham residents and visitors. BPD joins multiple police agencies throughout the state and country in making information available through smart phones.
