ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. A man who ambushed his estranged wife and shot her companion seven times as he used his body to protect her was sentenced to 45 years in prison, the 18th Judicial District Attorney s Office announced. The only reason we are alive today is because of a hero who sacrificed his body, and for the tireless medical efforts along with miracles that kept that hero alive, the victims said in a statement at sentencing.

Ryan Rogina, 30, was killed while babysitting a 6-year-old child in unincorporated Weld County on Oct. 30.
Four women including the child’s mother went out for a “girls night” and Rogina offered to babysit when the original babysitter fell through, detectives said during a hearing Monday. The women arrived back at the house about 1 a.m. and found Rogina dead in the driveway. The women told investigators they first encountered an armed man as they went into the home to check on the child, who investigators said was strangled but survived.
Trevor George, 32, was arrested at a Fort Collins gas station later that morning.
The Weld County Sheriff s Office is warning residents about a recent uptick in catalytic converter thefts in the county.
According to the sheriff s office, agencies nationwide have seen a rise of catalytic converter thefts during the past year, including locally.
Since January 1, 2021, Weld County has responded to total of 15 stolen catalytic converters, taken from vehicles during three different incidents at various locations. In addition, deputies are currently investigating an attempted catalytic converter theft case.
Law enforcement explains the reason they have been seeing an increase of converter thefts is due to the high amount of precious metals found in the devices. In addition, a news release published by the Catalytic Converter Theft Committee of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators, in cooperation with the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, noted that these parts are trading at record prices. The Weld County Sheriff’s Officer is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a days-old colt believed to have been stolen from a farm just north of Fort Lupton, according to a Wednesday news release.
The brown-and-white Gypsy colt, which was born four days ago, was reported missing early Wednesday from a farm in the 13600 block of Weld County Road 18 ½. Valued at about $12,000, the young horse disappeared sometime between 10:45 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.
