Former Schererville fire chief dies at 83, remembered as dedicated servant, family man

Govert, a Schererville native, died Wednesday. He was 83.  He is survived by his children Joseph (Donna) Govert, Valerie (Thomas) Laskey and Paula (Richard) Gard; grandchildren Joe (Courtney) Govert, Jessica (Kyle) DeHaven, Tom (Jennifer) Laskey and Ricky, Rory and Victoria Gard; great grandchildren Liam and Rilynn; step children Michele (Wayne) Peeples and Bill Govert; step grandchildren Anthony and Brandon (Emily) Peeples and Alyssa and Benjamin Govert; step great grandson Bentley; siblings Mary (late Jack) Coffman, Kathleen (Jim) Dinges, Pauline (Ron) Schutz and Phil (Jeanne) Govert; brothers-in-law Bob (Cille) Buchler and Ron (late Judeen) Peifer; and various nieces and nephews, his obituary states.

It’s the only point to date when Yazel approved an order that went beyond state guidance, and he said it was in response to the closure of restaurants just across the Ohio River in Louisville. The reduced capacity was an attempt at keeping Clark County residents safe, as Indiana’s more lax regulations were expected to bring Kentucky customers to Southern Indiana for dining.

Commissioners decide on new site for Clark County government building

By a 2-1 vote, the commissioners OK’d pursuing an agreement to purchase space inside a building under construction at River Ridge Commerce Center. Appraisals and other votes will be required before it’s a done deal, but the initial estimate for the purchase is between $6.5 and $6.7 million. According to Jack Coffman, president of the commissioners, the agreement would see Clark County occupy two of the three floors in the building. An exact address for the site isn’t available yet, Coffman said, but he added it’s being constructed inside the office park portion of River Ridge. The county would get about 30,000
