Alarms sounded at the University of Maryland when the Class of 2022 arrived at College Park. Seven percent of freshmen in fall 2018 were Black, down from 10 percent the year before and 13 percent in 2014. It marked a nadir for a metric crucial to the flagship university’s commitment to diversity in a state where about a third of public high school graduates each year are Black.

Updated: 10:52 AM EDT Apr 14, 2021 University of Maryland students will have the option to attend spring commencement in person.University President Darryll Pines said in an online statement that spring 2021 commencement exercises will be conducted in person on May 21 at Maryland Stadium and livestreamed online at commencement.umd.edu.Pines said the university has developed plans to create a ceremony on campus that prioritizes safety as we celebrate the academic success of our graduates. There will be two in-person ceremonies in an effort to ensure physical distancing and adherence to capacity limits.Details on tickets, regalia and safety measures required to attend, as well as answers to anticipated questions, are available at commencement.umd.edu. Additional information will continue to be added as it becomes available.Last year, the University System of Maryland canceled traditional, in-person commencement ceremonies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
