There’s no way around it, 2020 was a tough year for the forestry sector. Landowners, logging companies and sawmills saw significant losses.  A recent White House report on the economy estimated a $1.1 billion loss for the U.S. timber industry due to wildfires in the West, Hurricane Laura and, of course, disruption in markets caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame

Rick Cartwright. (Arkansas Farm Bureau) A native of Arkansas, Rick Cartwright joined the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture in 1992 after earning his Ph.D in plant pathology from University of California Davis. He earned international recognition as a rice pathologist and served as interim head of the plant pathology department, and then the associate director of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the university.   He was named interim director of extension in 2016 and senior associate vice president for agriculture-extension for the UA Division of Agriculture in 2017. He retired June 30, 2020.  He has earned a number of awards including most recently the John White Outstanding Extension State Education Award in 2000 and received the National Distinguished Rice Research and Education Award in 2004 from the Rice Technical Working Group.

January 1, 2021 In 1981, when the Jefferson Prep Patriots won the Class A State football championship with a 14-7 win over Lewisville, one of the biggest, strongest, toughest players on the team was a lineman named Buck James. “I thought I was strong,” he recalled recently. “I thought I was tough. But I found out I wasn’t.” James explained, “When I went to high school, the weight room was not a priority. When I went to college to play (at the University of Arkansas at Monticello), I thought the world was blue or green when I was on the football field because I was either looking at the sky or the ground. Because I got whipped. Because I wasn’t physically strong as those guys that came from Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi and came from good programs. 

🏈 Kansas Names Lee Grimes as Offensive Line Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football coach Les Miles announced Tuesday that Lee Grimes has been hired as offensive line coach. Grimes, a decorated former player and staff member at Texas A&M, spent the 2020 season at UNC Charlotte, and brings more than eight years of collegiate coaching experience to Lawrence. “Lee is an impressive coach who will bring a lot of passion and energy to the offensive line position room,” Miles said. “He was a great player at Brownwood High School in Texas and one that I recruited heavily when I was head coach at Oklahoma State. Lee comes highly recommended as a coach, and has worked with some great offensive coaches including Jimbo Fisher, Josh Henson and Jim Turner. Lee is a relationship builder, and is the type of leader we want in our program. I am eager to get to work with him.”
