Iowa reaches 1 million people fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Iowa s younger adults, many of whom have not been eligible for the vaccine as long, are less likely to have been vaccinated so far. About two-thirds of Iowans over the age of 50 have received at least one shot; just under two-thirds of Iowa adults below the age of 50 have not received any shots yet. There is not yet a clear geographic or demographic trend of which Iowa counties have more vaccinated residents. Johnson County, home of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, is the only Iowa county where a majority of residents of all ages have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination.

Family questions state after inmate had COVID-19, committed suicide

Des Moines Register Just after noon on Nov. 6, Melinda McNabb received a call from a prison counselor at Clarinda Correctional Facility.  Her son, Christopher James Rios, an inmate serving decades for a burglary and robbery, had contracted the coronavirus.   For McNabb, 52 and a mother of four, the news was worrying but expected: Coronavirus was peaking in Iowa’s prisons. “I figured it was just a matter of time,” she said of her 28-year-old son’s positive test. He was one of 4,800 prisoners who have tested positive for coronavirus in the state s overcrowded prisons since the pandemic hit Iowa more than a year ago.

Northeast Iowa town gathers for return of fallen hero Sgt Jim Smith

INDEPENDENCE Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith left his hometown for the last time Friday night, called with his tactical team to the scene of a standoff with an armed man in Grundy Center, 50 miles away. It was, said Sgt. Joe Schwinghammer, a friend in the Buchanan County sheriff s office, what he loved to do. On Sunday, Smith came home to Independence also for the last time. Hundreds of people lined State Highway 150, some with their hands on their hearts, to watch solemnly as dozens of Iowa State Patrol and other law enforcement vehicles from across the state entered town. Their emergency lights blazing, they passed beneath a U.S. flag suspended from a fire department ladder truck.
