Originally a theatre and dance major at the University of Iowa, Kendle Demery felt compelled to switch her major to nursing. She s never second guessed that choice. And since August 2011, she has been a nurse in the intensive care unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Police are investigating after an 18-year-old woman was found shot and seriously wounded Tuesday afternoon at an apartment in southwest Cedar Rapids.
According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, officers were called at 3:25 p.m. to a second-floor apartment at 2110 Westdale Drive.
When they arrived, officers said they found a woman inside the apartment with life-threatening injuries. Police have not identified the woman.
Emergency medical care was provided at the scene, police said, and the woman was transported to a local hospital. She was later moved to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of her injuries.
No arrests have been made. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Iowa City, Ia- An inmate from the Iowa State Penitentiary has died, likely due to COVID-19.
According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, Dale Dean Viers was pronounced dead, likely due to complications related to COVID-19 and other preexisting medical conditions at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Originally housed at the Iowa State Penitentiary, he had been taken to the hospital several days earlier for more advanced care as his medical condition began to worsen. Viers was 58 years old at the time of his death.
Viers had been serving a life sentence for Kidnapping 1st Degree from Black Hawk County. His sentence began on March 30, 1995.

A former Westgate man who was free on a $100,000 bond after being charged with murder is back in the Fayette County Jail. He is accused of violating probation and threatening to kill a woman he knows.
Dean Alan Hettinger, 24, of Oelwein, was charged Monday in Fayette County District court with third-degree criminal mischief and first-degree harassment. He is being held in jail without bond for probation and pre-trial supervision violations.
Magistrate John J. Sullivan has issued an order banning Hettinger from contacting the woman.
Hettingerâs next court appearance on the mischief and harassment charges is set for 11:30 a.m. Dec. 31 at the county courthouse in West Union.
