One Person Injured in Saturday Two-Vehicle Wreck North of Kalona

One person was injured in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred north of Kalona Saturday. According to Iowa State Patrol, at about 3:35 p.m. 60-year-old Kevin Dwight Hofer of Kalona was driving a Hyundai Sonata north on Highway 1 waiting to turn west onto 540th Street. Fifty-nine year-old Erick Kristofer Rasmussen of Wellman was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck southbound on Highway 1 when he passed a stationary vehicle on the shoulder and struck Hofer’s vehicle as he was turning. Rasmussen was transported by Johnson County Ambulance Service to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of serious injuries. Hofer’s vehicle was considered totaled and Rasmussen’s vehicle suffered $8,000 worth of damage. Rasmussen was cited for improper overtaking on the right. Kalona Fire and QRS, Washington County Ambulance Service, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.

Arrest, charges announced in Waterloo officer-involved shooting

By Chris Turner Police are identifying the suspect in Wednesday s officer-involved shooting in Waterloo. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says 44-year Marcelino Alvarez-Victoriano is facing two counts of Assault on a Peace Officer after he pointed a gun at a Black Hawk County sheriff s deputy and chased him. He was then shot by a Waterloo police officer. Alvarez-Victoriano is still hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. No officers were hurt in the shooting. Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation In Waterloo The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in downtown Waterloo early Wedenesday. The incident happened around 12:45 AM near the intersection of West 6th and Commercial Streets. According to Waterloo police, someone called the Black Hawk County dispatch center and reported that a man with a long gun was walking along Commerical Street toward downtown. A short time later, two sheriff s deputies spotted the man walking on the 6th Street bridge that crosses the Cedar River. According to information released by Waterloo police, the deputies made contact with the armed man. The suspect then pointed the weapon at hip level toward one of the deputies and chased after the deputy.

Washington County man convicted of murdering his wife dies while serving 50 year prison sentence

4/7/21 A Washington County man convicted of killing his wife ten years ago has died while serving his sentence. The Iowa Department of Correction says James Dean Blum was pronounced dead due to natural causes at 7:58 a.m. on Tuesday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was originally an inmate at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. Blum was 81 years old at the time of his death. In January of 2010 Blum called 9-1-1 saying he had “possibly killed his wife.” Officers who went to Blum’s home on Highway 92 found 67-year-old Patricia Blum unresponsive. She was taken to Washington County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
