Las águilas más grandes del mundo están en peligro. La deforestación en el Amazonas brasileño ha hecho que las águilas arpías, que pueden pesar más de siete kilos y medir hasta 100 centímetros de largo y 200 de envergadura (la distancia entre los extremos de las alas) no tengan presas suficientes para mantenerse sanas y para alimentar a sus crías, según lo ha revelado una nueva investigación publicada este miércoles en Nature. Everton Miranda, profesor de la Escuela de Ciencias de la Vida de la Universidad de KwaZulu-Natal en Sur África y primer autor del trabajo, cuenta que cuando la deforestación del hábitat de estas aves supera el 50%, los aguiluchos comienzan a morir de hambre. “Durante el estudio vimos polluelos de águila arpía que solo recibieron comida cada 15 días durante meses antes de fallecer”, dice Miranda.
