A 9-year-old girl was critically wounded in a shooting that also left a man hurt near the border of the Grand Crossing and Chatham neighborhoods on the South Side Thursday.
Chicago police said the girl was riding in the backseat of her mother s car as they were driving near East 79th and Maryland around 2:45 p.m. when the shooting happened. Police said they were not the intended targets.
The girl was struck in the back of the head. Chicago police rushed her to Comer Children s Hospital instead of waiting for paramedics to arrive. She remains in critical condition. Pastor Donovan Price spoke with the girl s mother at the hospital.

A 30-year-old man was also shot, and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
Three other victims, a 22-year-old man, a man in his 50s and one other unidentified adult, were also shot and taken to area hospitals. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
No further information on the shooting was immediately available, and no suspects are in custody.
The baby was at least the second child shot in Chicago on Thursday evening. In another shooting, a 9-year-old girl was riding in a vehicle in the city’s East Chatham neighborhood when she was shot in the head. She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was initially listed in critical condition.

At least five people were shot, including a baby, in Chicago s Englewood neighborhood Thursday night.
CHICAGO - A 1-month-old girl and six other people were hit by gunfire in Englewood Thursday night when three gunmen jumped from a black Jeep Cherokee and began firing up and down the street.
The attack came just days after two mass shootings killed two women and injured 15 other people in Chicago. At least 24 shootings across the city this year have wounded four or more people, according to a Sun-Times analysis.
