Three major US cities rocked by weekend gun violence as cops brace for 4th of July

A rash of shootings in Philadelphia since Friday left two people dead and 19 injured. And in New York City’s Times Square, a tourist was hurt when he was hit by an errant bullet after a fight allegedly erupted between street vendors. As police investigated the incidents of gun violence that broke out over the weekend in major cities across the nation, law enforcement officials are bracing for more violence during the Fourth of July holiday.

Chicago Weekend: 77 People Shot, 5 Dead

At least seven of the surviving victims are reportedly 17 years old or younger, according to CBS Chicago. Late on Sunday afternoon, two 17-year-old boys were in an alley behind the 3200 block of West 15th Street in Lawndale when a vehicle pulled up and two offenders with guns got out of the car, according to CBS Chicago. One boy was shot in the abdomen and right leg and the other sustained shots in the left shoulder and neck. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Ford Heights Shooting Cook County, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Jason Peden, 35-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after an investigation found he shot another man in the face, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced. At approximately 3:10 a.m. on June 20, Sheriff’s Police responded to the 1400 block of Diplomat Lane in Ford Heights where they found a 49-year-old Ford Heights man bleeding from his mouth. The victim identified Jason Peden, who was initially on scene, as the shooter. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he remains hospitalized.

CHICAGO — When a barrage of gunshots rang out Sunday night along a busy commercial strip of the South Shore community, a 15-year-old ran for his life. Even when he was shot in the leg, he was so determined to get away from the gunfire that he kept running for at least a block, according to his mother. “Whoever is outside when the (expletive) is going down is going to get shot down. Dad, mama, grandmama, kids, it don’t matter,” the woman told the Chicago Tribune in a telephone interview Monday. “These people trigger-happy. They shoot everyone they see, innocent bystander or not.”
