Active ingredients are the ingredients in medicines that have an effect in the body. Examples include paracetamol, ibuprofen and insulin.
From 1 February 2021 all eligible PBS and RPBS prescriptions will need to include the active ingredient, followed by brand if the prescriber believes it is clinically necessary. Consumers will start to notice active ingredient information on their PBS and RPBS prescriptions over the coming months.
Dr Andrew Rochford is a medical practitioner
with an Undergraduate Degree in Medical Science, Majoring in Anatomy and Neuroscience, Post Graduate degree from University of Sydney Medical School, Bachelor of Surgery with Honours.
Medically, he’s trained in emergency medicine, holding Registrar positions at major teaching hospitals around Australia, including Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.
