The Gut-Wrenching Truth About Sugar and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Yulia Reznikov/Getty Images For years, researchers have suspected that the typical Western diet plays a leading role in the high rates of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) observed in industrialized countries around the world. But what exactly about the Western diet high in fat, animal protein, and sugar, and low in vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fruit is to blame? While fat and animal protein have traditionally been considered the prime suspects, a growing number of studies now point to sugar as a leading culprit.  Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, researchers found a positive association between a “high sugar and soft drinks” eating pattern and risk of ulcerative colitis (UC). The study the largest of its kind, involving 366,351 participants from several European countries also determined that high vegetable intake modulated UC risk, even among high consumers of sugar and soft drinks.

Finally, Medications That May Help People Addicted To Meth

Methamphetamine use and resulting overdose deaths are devastating families in cities and towns across the U.S. In the world of addiction treatment, many specialists say meth is their most formidable challenge. There are no accepted medications that help patients resist the intense cravings. That starts to change today with the publication of a study through which meth users received a combination of two approved drugs, an antidepressant and naltrexone, which is prescribed for addictions to opioids and alcohol. Among the 403 study participants, nearly 14% of those who took the combo presented mostly drug-free urine samples. It’s a modest percentage but still more than five times greater than participants who received a placebo.

New trial data shows a combo of two drugs can help treat meth addiction

Pennington County Sheriff s Office via AP As rates of methamphetamine overdose soar in the United States, one of the biggest challenges for both people who use stimulants and clinicians is that there are no approved treatments for this type of addiction unlike the three medications authorized to treat opioid use disorders. But in a new study, researchers found that a combination of two existing drugs one, a treatment for opioid addiction, and the other, an antidepressant can help some people who use methamphetamine regularly cut back. In a clinical trial, the researchers reported Wednesday, 13.6% of participants treated with the two drugs had repeated urine tests free of methamphetamine, compared to just 2.5% of those who were given placebos.
