New flowering plant species discovered in Samar

Peter Quakenbush named the new species as Medinilla malabrigoi, in honor of Filipino taxonomist and UPLB professor Pastor L. Malabrigo Jr. for his invaluable contribution to Philippine flora conservation. The decription of the new species was published in the international scientific journal Phytotaxa on Feb. 10, 2021. Adorador noted that the “holotype” of the plant was collected on July 13, 2017. “But we have seen it way before, around December 2013, and have been observing and pondering on it being a new species since then,” he told the Manila Bulletin. “The new species is only known atop several forests over limestone in the municipality of Paranas, Samar, which is within Samar Island Natural Park (SINP),” the journal read.

UPLB agro-industry, IT special ecozones take shape

UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho Jr. and Director Romel M. Carlos of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office accompanied the SGV team to the site of the SEZ, which will occupy 70 hectares inside the UPLB Agricultural and Life Sciences Complex. A short meeting was held after the site visit to discuss the timeline and scope of the project.

DA, UPLB experts share strategies vs fall armyworm infestation

A FAW management team under UPLB’s College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) has been conducting several research studies on armyworm since 2019.

(uplb.edu.ph) “Some sectors are demanding that we disclose the details of our visits to the Office of the Governor Extension Office in Calamba City and the Laguna Police Provincial Office (LPPO) on 28 January 2021,” Camacho said in a statement on Monday. “The details of the twin visits are already available in the updates provided in our website. We took a proactive stance to uphold the academic freedom of the university, and ensure the safety and security of our constituents and our surrounding communities where our faculty and staff live and where our students reside in private dormitories,” he added.
