In honor of Women’s History Month, here is a story of valor, honor, and perseverance: the story of the Angels of Bataan, a group of U.S. Army and Navy nurses held captive by the Japanese in the Philippines for three grueling years during World War II.

The story begins on 8 December 1941, sometime in the predawn hours. Business was usual in the U.S. military hospitals located across the Philippines. But the nurses and other medical staff at Canacao Naval Hospital, Sternberg Hospital, Fort Mills Hospital, Camp John Hay Hospital, Fort McKinley Hospital, and elsewhere were about to receive the news that would change their lives forever.

THE DEPARTMENT of Health (DoH) reported 3,356 coronavirus infections on Monday, bringing the total to 597, 763.
The death toll rose to 12,521 after five more patients died, while recoveries increased by 61 to 545, 912, it said in a bulletin.
There were 39,330 active cases, 2% of which were critical, 91.2% were mild, 4% did not show symptoms, 2% were severe and 0.83% were moderate.
DoH said five duplicates had been removed from the tally, two of which were reclassified as recoveries. Six laboratories failed to submit data on Mar. 7.
Meanwhile, the agency said the surge in COVID-19 infections in Manila, the capital and nearby cities could not be traced solely to variants of the virus.

“Conditions on the ground are considered in determining limited face-to-face options,” CHED Chairman J. Prospero De Vera III told the Manila Bulletin on Sunday, March 7. Thus, he noted that there will be “no need” to issue additional directives for such.
In an advisory issued by the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges (APMC) also dated March 7, the suspension of face-to-face activities involving medical interns in NCR hospitals was announced.
De Vera confirmed that he was “already informed of this” and such is “provided for in the guidelines” – referring to the Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2021-001 issued early this month.
AT LEAST nine activists were killed in police raids across the Philippines on Sunday, just days after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered government forces to “kill” and “finish off” communist rebels.
Human rights groups Karapatan and the Kabataan (Youth) Party said that officers had executed at least six prominent leaders of social movements in operations across three provinces.
Police denied the allegations, insisting that they had issued arrest warrants for 18 people and a number were killed as they resisted.
Emmanuel “Manny” Asuncion, a labour leader in the province of Cavite, just outside Manila, was among those killed, fishermen’s federation Pamalakaya said in a statement.
