Heated argument erupts between UP supporters, critics
Published January 26, 2021 4:00pm Supporters and critics of the University of the Philippines engaged in a heated argument at UP Diliman on Tuesday over the termination of the decades-old agreement between the university and the Department of National Defense. According to Super Radyo dzBB’s Glen Juego, the argument was between members of the UP community and the League of Parents of the Philippines, who expressed support for the termination of the UP-DND accord that required state forces to notify UP officials before conducting operations inside campus. The LPP said the move will put a stop to issues of recruitment of students into the communist movement.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea confirmed on Tuesday the appointment of Lopez as Supreme Court Associate Justice. “Yes,” Medialdea said ia text message when asked to confirm the latest SC appointment by the President.
The appointment paper was signed by the President Monday, according to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque.
Roque, in a televised briefing, said the President expects Justice Lopez will ensure “judicial independence and rule of law” as well as continue the reforms in the court process.
Lopez, a graduate of University of the Philippines, was appointed to the CA back in 2012. He previously served as council of Manila from 2001 to 2006 and chief city prosecutor in 2006.

Pia urges DND, UP officials to hold dialogue with an open mind
Senator Pia S. Cayetano urged officials of the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Department of National Defense (DND) to engage in dialogue with an open mind, and in the spirit of finding solutions to differences that led to the unilateral abrogation of the 1989 UP-DND accord. I ask both parties to come in with an open mind. Come in assuming that you have a child studying there [in UP], Cayetano said Tuesday, as the Senate tackled a resolution expressing its sense to welcome the DND s decision to answer various calls for a dialogue with UP on the termination of the long-standing agreement.
