The University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has joined the chorus of regional tributes to Jamaican businessman Gordon Butch Stewart.
Stewart, who owned Sandals International Resorts Limited and ATL Group of Companies, which included the Jamaica Observer Limited, passed away in Miami on Monday.
Beckles paid tribute to Stewart in a statement Wednesday. There is an indomitable spirit that resides in the bosom of Jamaica, and when liberated with focus, discipline, and purpose rises and takes the world along with its imagination and energy. Our Butch, like Bob (Marley) and (Usain) Bolt, represents this cultural spirit of the ages.

Even with the emergence of vaccines, the public should not expect to step away from mask-wearing and other COVID precautions in the near future.
Jamaican doctor and professor, Peter Figueroa, warned the COVID-19 vaccines despite early results being encouraging still had far too many unknown quantities with regard to its overall effectiveness.
“The vaccines are not a silver bullet, we still need the non-pharmaceutical measures, the mask and the hand hygiene, the physical distancing and avoiding crowds, especially indoors,” said Figueroa while addressing the University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Forum on COVID-19 Vaccination yesterday.

Beckles to European Parliament: End colonialism in region, honor debt
Loop T&T reports that the University of the West Indies’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has called upon the European Parliament to end colonization in the region and honor its debt to the people.
Invited to speak to the parliament (at a virtual international panel on December 2, 2020) during a special discussion on the poverty legacies of colonization, he reminded the audience that Europe’s economic development was funded by a brutal and inhumane system of wealth extraction from the Caribbean, leaving the region impoverished and unable to meet its economic development targets.
