In Memoriam: Jacqueline E Fuller Certion, 1972-2020 : The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education

Filed in In Memoriam on January 1, 2021 Jacqueline Certion, assistant director of the Foundations for Academic Success Track, or FASTrack, in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Mississippi, died at her home on December 18. She was 48 years old. Certion joined the staff at the university in 2001. The FASTrack Learning Community helps students by offering a network of support staff and resources. In her position, Certion served as an adviser and mentor for thousands of students over the years. She also was the director of the university’s Books and Bears program, which solicits toys and donations for the children of Facilities Management employees during the Christmas holidays.

William Winter was by and large beloved by the people of Mississippi. Through his actions and his manner, Winter earned that status. The state’s Democrats lionized him, emulated him, and invoked his name in their own political affairs. Despite their steadfast disagreements over public policy, the state’s Republicans respected him, wisely realizing that well into Winter’s ninth decade, his fingers on the political scales still had significant weight.

Canavin selected Laurel Teacher of the Year

For her exemplary performance in the classroom, Laurel Magnet School of the Arts first-grade teacher Kathleen Canavin was named the 2020 Laurel School District Teacher of the Year. “Receiving this award this year means to me that even through the new challenges this pandemic has thrown at us, we are still able to find new ways to reach our students,” Canavin said. “We, as teachers, are resilient, and while this year has been very challenging, it has also been very rewarding. This award means that my passion for teaching has shined through the challenges and continued to impact my students in a positive light.”
