HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker plans to allow the cityâs mask mandate to expire on Saturday.
Barker extended the order in April, saying that it would be the last time if COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations remained low in the metro area.
The extension covered the remainder of the spring semesters for William Carey University and the University of Southern Mississippi.
During his daily virtual briefing Friday, Barker said that he will not be renewing the mask order once it expires at 5 p.m. Saturday.

A small plane crashed into a Mississippi home, killing one of the home’s four occupants and three Texas residents who were flying to a university graduation ceremony, authorities said Wednesday.
A National Transportation Safety Board investigator was en route to Hattiesburg, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of the Mississippi capital of Jackson, to investigate Tuesday’s crash, which caused a fire, the agency said.
Authorities weren’t aware of any distress calls from the Mitsubishi MU-2B-60 but have yet to review air traffic recordings, agency spokesman Peter Knudson said. He confirmed an investigator was being sent to the scene.
Dr. Louis Provenza was a Shreveport native who practiced in Slidell before moving to Texas.
Anna Calhoun was a star volleyball player while in high school in her native Tuscaloosa.
Harper Provenza and her mother were inseparable, family says.
A beloved assistant pastor. A highly praised neurosurgeon. A biology student and talented volleyball player. A 2-year-old girl who was a blessing to everyone around her.
These are the four people who were killed May 4 when an airplane flown by 67-year-old Dr. Louis Provenza crashed into the home of 55-year-old Gerry Standley. Also on board the plane were 23-year-old Anna Calhoun and her daughter, Harper Provenza.

The city of Hattiesburg will let its current mask mandate expire at 5 p.m. Saturday as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to decline and those receiving vaccinations rise.
Mayor Toby Barker said Friday the Saturday expiration allowed the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University to safely get through graduation ceremonies.
Businesses may require staff and customers to wear masks and individuals may still choose to wear a mask, which will remain their prerogative, Barker said.
”We continue to ask you to please remain considerate to those who choose to continue wearing a mask,” he said. “This is obviously a change for a lot of people.
