Search suspended for college student missing in Gulf

  The search for a University of Southern Mississippi student who went missing Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico has been suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard. Crews searched for Robert Brent, 20, of Yazoo County, Mississippi for nearly 1,800 square miles. A friend reported Brent missing after he disappeared while swimming off the southern shore of Dauphin Island. The search team was made up of the Coast Guard and local authorities that used aircrafts, boats and teams combing the shore.  Tags:

Three Wichitans killed in Mississippi plane crash A National Transportation Safety Board team was in Hattiesburg, Miss on Thursday, examining the site of an airplane crash that killed four people, including three Wichitans. The NTSB will be on-scene the next several days, said Alex Lemishko, a NTSB senior air safety investigator, during a news conference Thursday. We will be examining the machines, the environment, the pilot  those sorts of things. It s very preliminary to speculate as to the cause right now and the investigation; as far as the NTSB is concerned, there will be a preliminary report published within 15 days,  Lemishko said.

Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce names Scott Harper as president

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce has named Scott Harper as its new president a position he held nearly a decade ago following the resignation of Brian Bondy in January. Bondy had accepted a position as the president of the Granbury Chamber of Commerce. Harper has more than 21 years of nonprofit experience, with 16 of those with the YMCA in Tampa and Houston, according to a news release from the chamber. After his graduation from the University of Southern Mississippi, Harper started his professional career with the corporate fitness center of Wal-Mart. Harper was hired in January 2012 to serve as the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce president.

Search continues for missing swimmer on Dauphin Island

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (AP) Authorities continue to search for a Mississippi student who went missing Sunday while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at Alabama’s Dauphin Island. The U.S. Coast Guard tells local news outlets that Rob Brent is a student at the University of Southern Mississippi. The Coast Guard says Brent was reported missing around 6 p.m. Sunday after last being seen near a sandbar on the island’s west end. Coast Guard boats and aviation units were looking for Brent Monday, as was the Mobile County sheriff’s flotilla, Dauphin Island emergency responders and the Alabama Marine Patrol. All-terrain vehicles are combing shorelines.
