A ‘skeletal age’ calculator to predict bone fracture risk
Garvan researchers have developed a model to predict the biological age of bones that may improve the management of osteoporotic fractures.
Researchers at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research have developed a computational model to calculate ‘skeletal age’, a personalised estimate of an individual’s risk of bone fracture and premature death.
The skeletal age calculator, which will be accessible to doctors and health professionals, aims to better identify those at risk of a first bone fracture and subsequent fractures, and also estimates how fractures impact life expectancy.
Osteoporosis, a disease which reduces bone strength and increases bone fracture risk, is a major national health issue and estimated to affect over 900,000 Australians. The cost of osteoporosis and fracture in Australia is $3.4 billion annually.
Australia-China relations, which have been spiralling downward for some time, continue to sink. The latest blow comes in the form of the formal arrest of Australian journalist and former business anchor for Chinese state media outlet China Global Television Network (CGTN), Cheng Lei.
Cheng was first detained by Chinese state authorities on August 13 last year.
Chinese officials have offered scant explanation for her arrest, with the Australian government simply stating it had been advised Cheng had been arrested “on suspicion of illegally supplying state secrets overseas”.
Foreign Minister Marise Payne told ABC radio that Australia was currently “not privy to [the] evidence” supporting Beijing’s move. She said Australia was “seeking further advice in relation to the charges”.

Newswise Under increasing global warming, tropical fish are escaping warmer seas by extending their habitat ranges towards more temperate waters.
But a new study from the University of Adelaide, published in
2 emissions may make cooler, temperate waters less welcoming.
“Every summer hundreds of tropical fish species extend their range to cooler and temperate regions as the waters of their natural habitat become a little too warm for comfort,” says lead author Ericka Coni, PhD student in the University’s School of Biological Sciences. “For at least two decades, Australian temperate reefs have been receiving new guests from the tropics.

No good citizen in their right mind would want to see democracy further eroded in the United States of America. Cold cash and mercantilist in all levels of political process have lowered – shall we say Trumped – how the United States is perceived internationally. President Biden set out his thoughts for the world to consider yesterday.
New Zealand is one of our closest friends and partners. The unbreakable bond we share was established when the first US Consul to New Zealand was on hand to witness the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840.”
