Flag Lowering for Abdul Raheem Yaseer

Abdul Raheem Yaseer passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the age of 81. He spent more than 30 years as a member of the Center for Afghanistan Studies and International Programs Office. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) flag will be lowered today, Friday, Jan. 8, in memory of UNO employee Abdul Raheem Yaseer. Yaseer passed away on Jan. 1, 2021, and was 81 years old at the time of his passing. Throughout his more than 30 years at UNO, Yaseer worked with the Center for Afghanistan Studies as Assistant Director and International Programs office as Coordinator for Education and Outreach. In these roles, Yaseer worked closely with UNO s Study Abroad program, served as a student advisor, and oversaw several multi-million dollar grants and initiatives in Afghanistan including building communications curriculums at various universities, training dozens of female teachers in the years after the Sept. 11 attacks, and several job training programs.

She is also a certified Exercise Physiologist through ACSM. Her teaching interests include implementing physical activity in diverse populations, worksite wellness program planning, weight management and motivation for physical activity.

Mavericks Take Action with Community Service

  Student-athletes from both the UNO baseball and golf teams are working with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and the 4Urban.org organization led by Preston Love, Jr. to address the needs of children and families that are most acute during the holidays and beyond.   On Saturday, Jan. 9, the teams will join with community members to distribute toys and gifts to 30 children in need to help brighten the extended holiday season.   “Our student-athletes take very seriously their call to be a part of the greater Omaha community,” said Trev Alberts, Vice Chancellor for Athletics.  “I am grateful that these Mavericks have taken the lead in improving the lives of deserving families through this partnership.
