Photo credit: ©Isabel Beasley When Dr. Augustine Mungkaje of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) recommended me for an internship at the end of my undergraduate in 2013, little did I know what conservation is and how science can be applied to protect the natural environment.

Successful Nature Park internship

110 reads During these challenging times with the COVID-19 pandemic, internships for students are hard to come by with many businesses scaling down on staff. However, in true community spirit, Port Moresby Nature Park has made it possible for four students from the University of Papua New Guinea, under the Sustainable Development Program, by offering them a six-week internship program at the Park. Aaron Urakowi, Akoma Huripa, Jeremiah Pingin and Gol Karal began their internship with the Park in March of this year and have been actively assisting the Park’s marketing team preparing some of its treasured displays for the upcoming Trash to Treasure Sculpture Festival.

Lisa Waup is a thoughtful and spirited artist who creates elaborate and sophisticated work that eloquently illustrates her life’s journey of discovery and connection. Her work highlights the importance of ancestral relationships, weaving stories of her past into contemporary sculptural forms. I first met Waup in 2012. In my role at the time as curator at the Koorie Heritage Trust, we worked together to present her first major solo exhibition

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Papua New Guinea and I have been the Director of Sea Women of Melanesia Training Program at the Coral Sea Foundation Organisation since November 2018. I became a scuba dive instructor during this time and have helped train women in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. I have also been actively involved in the reef survey, training and community engagement activities in Kimbe and Manus (West Coast) during this pandemic period.
