Professor, civil rights leader to speak at UNO graduation

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Raphael Cassimere Jr., an academic and civil rights activist who was the first Black instructor hired at the University of New Orleans, will speak at the university s spring graduation ceremony, the university announced.
Cassimere was hired in 1969 when the university was known as Louisiana State University in New Orleans and taught for nearly four decades, UNO said in a news release announcing his role in the spring commencement ceremony. He was also active in the NAACP where he was the president of the organization s Youth Council from 1960-1966 and helped lead local boycotts. He also served as secretary of the New Orleans branch of the organization, chairman of its southwest regional branch and has been a NAACP certified trainer since 1985.

Two graduated from the University of New Orleans, two from LSU. Most claim some connection to Louisiana. The LSU Presidential Search Committee plans to interview all eight candidates on Monday and Tuesday, then meet on April 30 to decide which finalists to recommend to the LSU Board of Supervisors. The 16 supervisors have final say on who will be president of the LSU system and chancellor of the flagship Baton Rouge campus.

New California State University Dominguez Hills Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Dena Freeman-Patton has a stellar career of service to the wellbeing of student-athletes. She began her tenure at CSUDH on April 12.
Throughout her career, Freeman-Patton showed how she can run a thriving athletics department while prioritizing the overall success of the student-athletes. In 2018, Freeman-Patton became Administrator of the Year by Women Leaders in College Sports.
