New law could cost school districts, PED money

Created: April 08, 2021 06:42 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The New Mexico Civil Rights Act has received a lot of attention for eliminating qualified immunity which protects law enforcement from certain kinds of lawsuits.  However, a fiscal impact report from the state’s legislative finance committee shows there could be some unintended consequences for local school districts. Under the new law, New Mexico residents can sue government agencies and groups like police departments for violating their civil rights.  Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the bill this week but did not respond to KOB 4’s request for comment on this story. “Indeed, good public servants work tirelessly every single day to protect those rights, to ensure them, to safeguard New Mexicans,” she said in a press release on Wednesday.

NIFA invests $10 77m in animal reproduction, welfare research

Apr 09, 2021 The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) recently awarded $6.72 million in funding for 15 grants to enhance animal reproduction, and $4.05 million in funding for 8 grants that will improve the welfare and well-being of agricultural animals. “NIFA invests in science-based management practices that help America’s agricultural enterprises thrive, while meeting growing consumer demand for high-quality food and rigorous sustainable agriculture practices,” said NIFA Director Carrie Castille.  These 23 grants are part of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, the nation’s leading competitive grants program for agricultural sciences. The 15 animal reproduction awards are for projects that will address better strategies for animal production systems by enhancing reproductive management.
