British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said British people can begin hugging again – carefully. This new easing of pandemic restrictions comes during a big decrease in infections across the country.
Great Britain is now seeing around 2,000 new coronavirus cases a day, down from nearly 70,000 a day during the January peak. Daily deaths have also dropped a lot, with only two recorded Sunday.

LONDON (AP) In less than a week, people in England will be able to give friends and family a hug for the first time since restrictions were put in place in March last year at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed Monday that he has given the go-ahead for that much-missed human contact from May 17 as part of the next round of lockdown easing following a sharp fall in new coronavirus infections. Other easing measures included the reopening of pubs and restaurants indoors as well as cinemas and hotels, and allowing two households to meet up inside a home.
People in the UK look forward to hugging their loved ones, dining in restaurants, and escaping from the UK for overseas holidays.
But when Boris Johnson urged Britons to indulge in “cautious hugs,” the confused Huffington Post cautioned: “Looking at the hug, it sounds like An indie band in the middle of the Middle Ages!”

A former landfill site is being transformed into a green energy innovation park – with work now underway at Elstow in Bedfordshire, England.
Bedford Borough Council was awarded more than £1.8 million from the South East Midlands Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) Getting Building Fund in 2020, enabling plans for the all-new Bedford Green Technology and Innovation Park to become a reality.
Work to cap the closed 30 ha. site with clay began in 2020 and the site is soon set to become home to more than 1800 solar panels, which will generate and supply onsite buildings and local businesses with low carbon, clean energy.
Construction teams are on site and at work and to date 120 000 t of materials have been brought onto the site for the capping works, now underway. Once the capping works are completed a platform will be formed for the installation of the solar panels.
