Deregulation. How this one word remains an enigma with regards to the downstream oil and gas sector in Nigeria must be one of the wonders of the world.
How can it be that something so glaringly and clearly the best way to go for Nigeria is not being adopted – especially when short term fixes like subsidies and pseudo deregulation policies have failed to make any impact?
The billions of naira Africa’s largest oil-producing country commits to subsidising petrol is no longer news, but what is more infuriating is the opportunity cost forgone in a slow growing economy that could use more private sector investments for job creation and growth.

Non-profit organisation Connected Development had many sitting right up with this startling claim about mortality in Africa’s most populous country. Thankfully, it’s incorrect. To mark World Health Day in April 2021, Nigerian non-profit organisation Connected Development made an alarming claim about child mortality.“In commemoration of #WorldHealthDay2021, we are reminded that annually, Nigeria loses over 99% of children below the age of five due to dilapidated health care services,” the organisation tweeted.
Connected Development, which focuses on helping vulnerable communities, blamed poor health care, especially at the primary level, for this. But do nearly all children in Africa’s most populous country die before they reach the age of five? We looked at the data.
Wike Condemns Attacks On Police Formations
Seven policemen had been killed in a night attack on Police facilities in Emohua Local Government Area and other parts of Rivers State. The Guardian gathered that the gunmen who took the police unawares also burnt two patrol vehicles and destroyed C4i security checkpoint along East West road.
The incidents happened close to Choba bridge near University of Port Harcourt and in Rumuji Community by 10pm on Friday night.It was learnt that the gunmen first stormed and attacked the C4i checkpoint located after Choba bridge destroying it but no officer was killed there. They later proceeded to Ogbakiri junction where they killed the police officer on duty.
Emmanuel Onwubiko Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on governors of South Eastern states, including governors of Akwa Ibom and Cross River to unify their positions and find multidimensional solution to the rapidly expanding attacks targeting primarily police formations, which have led to dozens of casualties. The group said the governors of Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Abia, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states must work out a synergy, an approach to bring all contending groups and political forces together to brainstorming sessions, with the fundamental objectives of unravelling the remote, and immediate causes and circumstances that have led to the spate of attacks against security institutions and formations with a view to finding out what the grievances are to arrive at the best way forward.
