University of Montana Housingâs live-in, full-time staff met last week to discuss how to implement House Bill 102, which will allow guns on UMâs campus and student housing starting in June.Â
The meeting came after the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education announced in an email to students and staff in late March that a draft of its policy on the bill will be completed by early May. The policy will implement HB 102, a bill Gov. Greg Gianforte signed in February that will allow open and concealed carry of firearms on campuses in the Montana University System starting on June 1.Â
House Bill 2 provides $1 million to MUS for implementation of gun bill
House Bill 2, an appropriations bill in the Montana Legislature, includes $1 million for the Montana University System to implement House Bill 102. Signed into law by Gov. Greg Gianforte on Feb. 18, HB 102 will allow guns to be carried on college and university campuses starting in June.
The billâs text lists firearm training, metal detectors and awareness campaigns as possible uses for the funds. It also clarifies that implementation of HB 102 would be void if MUS contests its legality in a lawsuit. ASUM is against HB 2, listing drastic cuts to need-based student aid all while putting more money behind HB 102.Â

UM Police Warn of Scam Phone Calls
The University of Montana Police Department alerted students, and the community, of reports of scammers posing as U of M police. Members of the campus community have reported receiving harassing phone calls where a male caller says there is a warrant for their arrest. One student says the scammer who called them used vulgar language and their caller ID indicated that they were calling from the Missoula Police Department. So it appears that the scammers are using a common trick known as spoofing, where they make it appear that they are calling from a phone number that is not theirs.
