Private colleges and universities in New England were some of the first to announce they ll require vaccination for all students returning to campus this fall. Some of the region s state colleges and universities have also begun to follow suit – but not all of them.
State universities in Massachusetts are leading the way with vaccine mandates, while university systems in neighboring states have been less explicit. At least one has said it will wait until permanent approval of the COVID-19 vaccines by the Food and Drug Administration before considering a requirement for students.

GREENFIELD The City Council voted during an emergency meeting Tuesday to opt out of recent State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board legislation that would allow aerial spraying in certain situations.
Board of Health Chair Nancee Bershof said the legislation authorizes the State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board, under the Department of Agricultural Resources, to “engage in preventative, management and eradication methods whenever the commission of public health determines an elevated risk of arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) exists or may exist for the current or upcoming year.”
“The difficulty is when aerial spraying is the recommended choice,” Bershof said. “The chemical adulticide used is Anvil 10-10. Controversy exists about the safety and efficacy of this treatment and of the effectiveness in general of aerial spraying.”
The Antarctic ice sheet is much less likely to become unstable and cause dramatic sea-level rise in upcoming centuries if the world follows policies that keep global warming below a key 2015 Paris climate agreement target, according to a new study.
But if global warming exceeds the target 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) the risk of ice shelves around the ice sheet’s perimeter melting would increase significantly and their collapse would trigger rapid Antarctic melting. That would result in at least 0.07 inches of global average sea-level rise a year in 2060 and beyond.
That’s faster than the average rate of sea-level rise over the past 120 years and, in vulnerable coastal places like downtown Annapolis, Maryland, has led to a dramatic increase in days of extreme flooding.
